Imagine an entire village rising and falling with the water. In Kampong Phluk, just outside of Siem Reap, locals don’t just live near the water — they live on it.
This floating village on the Tonlé Sap Lake isn’t a tourist trap if you go the right way — it’s a window into a way of life that’s both resilient and remarkable.
What You’ll See
🏠 Stilted houses that tower 20 feet above the water during the dry season.
🛶 Longboats navigating winding canals like tuk-tuks of the lake.
🧒 Children paddling to school instead of riding bikes.
🍚 Fishermen casting nets, families drying fish, and floating markets in action.
During rainy season, the entire village becomes Venice-like — boats replace motorbikes, and water laps at doorsteps.
Best Time to Visit
Wet season (June–November) = best for full floating experience.
Dry season = still worth it, and you can see the dramatic stilts and more walking trails.
Ethical Visiting Tips
Go with a tour operator that partners with local communities.
Don’t give candy or money to kids — support village-run businesses instead.
Skip the crocodile farms — many treat animals poorly.
How to Get There
It’s about 30–40 minutes from Siem Reap. A private tuk-tuk or driver is your best bet. You’ll pay a small entrance fee, then hop on a boat to cruise through the village.
